The Charlotte Hornets need to work hard to make their fans as happy as some other teams in the NBA. We created a way to see which team’s supporters have gotten the most to celebrate in the past 11 seasons.

We looked at two main things to figure this out. First, we calculated how many minutes fans spent watching their team for each win. We did this by adding up all the regular-season games played from the 2011-12 season to the 2021-22 season. We multiplied this by the average time an NBA game is shown on TV, which is two hours and thirteen minutes. Then, we divided this number by the total wins during that time. This shows how many minutes fans watch before their team wins a game.

The second thing we checked was how well each team did in the playoffs. We took away points based on how far teams went in the playoffs. Every time a team made it to the playoffs, they lost one point. If they won a playoff series, they lost three points. Getting to the NBA Finals meant losing three more points. Finally, winning the NBA Championship took away an extra fifteen points. After adding up all the points and taking them away from the first number, they had a final score and ranking for each team.

Sadly, the Charlotte Hornets didn’t do so well. Their fans are the 25th most rewarded out of 30 teams. They spent 318 minutes watching for each win. That’s the 26th highest amount of time in the league. They only had two points taken away because of playoff success. That’s the same as the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves, which is the second least in the league. The Hornets have had four different coaches in the last 11 seasons and only made the playoffs two times with Steve Clifford. They had one playoff as the Charlotte Bobcats in 2014 and one as the Charlotte Hornets in 2016, but both times they didn’t get past the first round.

In the six years since they last made the playoffs, they’ve only had one season with more wins than losses. That was when they had a record of 43 wins and 39 losses in 2022. They also only finished at the top of their division once in 2019. From the 2011-12 season to the 2021-22 season, the Hornets won 363 games and lost 500 in the regular season. They didn’t win any playoff series.

For the 2022-2023 season, the Hornets don’t have great chances according to the betting experts. DraftKings Sportsbook says they have a low chance to win the NBA Championship and not a great chance to win their conference. They’re only expected to do a little better than the Orlando Magic in their division. The Hornets also aren’t likely to get into the playoffs.
