The deadline for submitting applications to become a sports betting operator in North Carolina is today. If applicants meet this deadline they will have the opportunity to launch online sports betting once the market becomes active. With popular sportsbook apps like DraftKings Sportsbook North Carolina ready to enter the market, NC sports betting apps will give residents plenty of options for placing wagers.

To allow regulators time to review the extensive application packets, the North Carolina Lottery Commission recommended that operators, suppliers and service providers submit their applications by this deadline. The launch of North Carolina sports betting is highly anticipated, and operators like DraftKings will be eager to take advantage of NC sportsbook promos to attract customers.

The process of vetting a license for a sports betting operator in North Carolina is expected to take 60 to 90 days, which includes conducting a background investigation. Some operators have already gained an advantage over others. As of week fifteen operators had requested applications but only four of them have established partnerships with professional sports entities.

It’s worth noting that the Carolina Panthers of the NFL have not yet announced their sports betting partner. Each operator that forms a partnership with a sports entity must confirm their agreement in writing with state regulators.

According to state law there will be 11 licenses and two additional tribal licenses issued to tribes operating casinos, in North Carolina. Operators are required to pay a license fee of $1 million.

After todays recommended deadline sportsbooks can still apply for licenses.There is a risk that applications might not be approved in time for the 2024 NCAA March Madness tournament when online sports betting goes live. Caesars, the operator of the two EBCI owned casinos is expected to submit an application. BetMGM and DraftKings are also anticipated to be among the sportsbooks launching in North Carolina during 2024 as they have targeted the state for online sports betting expansion. While BetMGM doesn’t have a partnership with the Carolina Hurricanes its promotions will still be featured during NHL games due to their partnership with the league.

Although no specific launch date has been set yet Governor Cooper aims for it to coincide with March Madness. In addition to sports betting at tribal casinos residents will have to wait until, at least June 15th before they can place online sports wagers. The NCLC (North Carolina Lottery Commission) plans to resume work after New Years Day in order to finalize regulations and approve license applications. The Sports Betting Committee has a meeting scheduled for January 4th. The full commission meets on January 10th. We expect that a launch date will be announced soon during one of these meetings. If everything goes smoothly with the vetting process it is possible that wagering could begin by March Madness. Governor Roy Cooper has relied on the North Carolina Lottery Commission (NCLC) to ensure that the industry is operational, by March.
