The Sports Betting Advisory Committee of the North Carolina State Lottery Commission has recently released regulations for sports betting in North Carolina. These new rules come after the public comment period on the set of rules closed last week. The updated regulations can be found on the NC Lottery website and will be open for public comments until November 27 with a public hearing scheduled for November 20.

As per the sports betting law in North Carolina, sportsbooks are allowed to commence operations as early as January 8, 2024 but no later than June 14, 2024. Although there was no update on the proposed launch date during Tuesday’s meeting, regulators have expressed their intention to introduce sportsbooks as close to January 8 as possible in order to capitalize on March Madness betting with North Carolina sports betting promo codes.

So what do these new rules entail? The previous set of regulations primarily focused on definitions and other provisions outlined by the legislature in their law. The updated set primarily covers aspects such as integrity monitoring, consumer protections, responsible gaming measures and operator responsibilities. One notable inclusion is a prohibition on sportsbook operators acquiring naming rights for sports facilities within the state of North Carolina including luxury boxes and other areas within these facilities.

The agency concluded its public comment period for the round of rules on November 1. The second batch of proposed rules also includes these regulations. They are not open for public comment. One significant addition in the regulations is the prohibition of fantasy sports pick ’em contests.

During the hearing on October 27 regarding the proposed rules, only representatives from PrizePicks and Underdog spoke. North Carolina has made changes to its sports betting license framework through amendments in the state budget. Of allowing only 12 untethered licenses, sportsbook operators will now be required to partner with a professional sports organization within the state. Currently there are 11 organizations that qualify in North Carolina. Additional ones may be added through sports expansion in the state.

North Carolina continues to make progress despite these changes. Governor Roy Cooper signed the sports betting legislation into law after a push earlier this year. Lawmakers were close to passing sports betting in 2022. Regulators have been relatively quiet this summer with a mandate to start no earlier than January 8, 2024. However, they have recently increased their efforts due to an aim for launching close as possible to January 8 in order to capitalize on March Madness betting with BetMGM bonus code in North Carolina and other North Carolina sports betting promo codes. There are currently three sportsbooks located within tribal casinos in the state of North Carolina, known as the Tar Heel State.
