North Carolina has recently implemented a change by permitting individuals to engage in sports betting through their mobile phones. This new legislation brings forth the opportunity for colleges to receive funding from the taxes generated by sports betting activities. With six months at their disposal colleges can now strategize on the most effective ways to utilize this additional funding to support their sports teams.

Governor Roy Cooper signed House Bill 347 emphasizing that it’s not solely the professional teams like the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets and Carolina Hurricanes who will reap benefits from this development. Colleges are also set to receive assistance for their sports programs. Fans can now use North Carolina sports betting apps like DraftKings North Carolina to place wagers, while the state benefits from increased tax revenue and promo codes offered by the North Carolina sportsbooks.

A total of thirteen state run universities, including North Carolina Universities with Division I Sports Programs

All will be allocated funds from two pools. Initially each school will receive $300 000. Following expenses such as supporting individuals with gambling issues and fostering youth sporting activities the remaining funds will be subject, to a 20% deduction which will then be distributed equally among these institutions. Over a span of four years the sports departments of each school could potentially acquire to $6 million. At the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) the athletics director expressed enthusiasm for the funding emphasizing its impact on student athletes, coaches and the entire sports program. The allocated funds will contribute to aspects that enhance students experiences, such as improving travel arrangements providing quality sports equipment and ensuring the retention of skilled coaches and trainers.

It’s important to note that different colleges may allocate their funds differently. For instance UNC Asheville aims to support their student athletes in ways including prioritizing their mental well being and education. Additionally they prioritize maintaining sports facilities accessible to all.

However amidst the legalization of sports betting there is a need to educate students about its associated risks. East Carolina University is conducting a study to gain insights into students perceptions of gambling. Preliminary findings reveal that many students have engaged in gambling activities within the year and view it as a concern on campus. Surprisingly though most have not received education regarding the potential dangers or how to identify when gambling becomes problematic.

The athletic department, at East Carolina University seeks to ensure that every athlete is well informed about gambling regulations and guidelines. It is anticipated that the acquired tax revenue will be utilized to provide education on gambling for students, coaches and staff members.

Considering the developments in North Carolina it is evident that the implementation of the sports betting legislation will bring about significant changes. Colleges are preparing to utilize the funds to support their sports teams and educate their students.
