North Carolina regulators are making progress towards the introduction of North Carolina sports betting in the state.

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission recently announced that it has enlisted the help of Gaming Laboratories International (GLI) to facilitate the establishment of sportsbooks in NC. This hiring took place on August 11 as stated on the NC Lottery website.

Over the year GLI has successfully supported Massachusetts, Vermont and Kentucky in launching their respective sports betting markets. Kentucky is set to commence with in person sportsbooks week making it one of the fastest markets to transition from governor approval to live sports betting in the United States.

GLIs role in North Carolinas North Carolina sports betting initiative involves providing assistance with testing and certification within the industry. Specifically they will aid regulators in rule making, licensing procedures development of an audit program and risk control measures.

In addition to facilitating North Carolina sports betting activities the NC Lottery also plans to introduce horse racing wagering within the state.

While there is a deadline of June 14 2024 for launching North Carolina sports betting operations in North Carolina it is possible for them to be up and running early as January 8. The recent announcement emphasized that the lottery aims to establish an effective framework for North Carolina sports betting as soon, as possible. In addition to the actions taken by regulators in North Carolina there is also a request for proposal period for an “Enterprise Regulatory System” related to the lottery. The purpose of this system is to manage licensing and regulatory requirements within the state. Responses to the request for proposal are expected by September 6th.

Moving on to updates from North Carolina as of August 8th the NC Lottery has started accepting sign ups from operators. These sign ups will allow operators to stay updated on any developments or changes related to the NC Lottery. Furthermore Sterl Carpenter was recently appointed as the deputy director of gaming compliance and North Carolina sports betting at the lottery. His responsibility is to establish and expand this department.

Regarding North Carolina sports betting in North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed it into law in June. However it’s likely that the state will miss out on most of the NFL betting season since it can only launch early as January 8th according to regulations. Nevertheless the NC Lottery has expressed its intentions to launch North Carolina sports betting as soon as possible.

When compared to Kentucky and Maine which have also legalized sports betting this year or last year respectively North Carolinas path towards sports betting is slower than Kentucky but faster than Maine where launches are still pending despite Governor Janet Mills signing sports betting into law last year.

In terms of setup for North Carolina sports betting in North Carolina, up to twelve online North Carolina sports betting apps will be permitted in the state. Eight professional sports organizations in North Carolina are now allowed to have sportsbooks where people can place bets in person.

The state has decided to impose an 18% tax on the revenue generated from sports betting.
