North Carolina sports betting apps and sites are set to go live on March 11th, allowing Tar Heel State residents 21 and up to wager on sports from anywhere within state lines. With the launch date fast approaching, North Carolinians are already doing their homework on the various sportsbooks coming to the market.

Our team analyzed Google search trends data over the past 90 days to see which North Carolina sports betting operators people are most interested in signing up with once launching. The rankings provide insight into consumer awareness and sentiment towards the imminent crop of mobile sportsbook options.

DraftKings Leads NC Sportsbook Hype

The clear leader in search popularity for North Carolina sports betting apps is DraftKings. The daily fantasy sports titan turned sportsbook juggernaut saw search interest 36% higher than its nearest competitor.

As one of the most recognizable and advertised brands in the industry, it’s no surprise DraftKings tops the list. The sportsbook is aggressively targeting the North Carolina market through partnerships with the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte FC, and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.

DraftKings is known for having one of the smoothest platforms and most extensive betting menus out there. That likely explains the high interest from Tar Heel State sports fans eager to try it out.

FanDuel Also Piques NC Bettors’ Interest

Coming in second place with 29% search interest is DraftKings arch rival FanDuel. FanDuel Sportsbook has also become a household name through aggressive marketing and sponsorships.

NC bettors are drawn to FanDuel for its competitive odds, ongoing odds boosts, same game parlays, and quality mobile experience. FanDuel has yet to announce major team deals in North Carolina, but it’s still clearly on people’s radars for the launch.

ESPN, bet365 Have NC Buzzing

Tied for third with equal search popularity are two contrasting sportsbook brands – ESPN BET and bet365.

ESPN BET just formed last year as an extension of the sports media empire, while UK-based bet365 has catered to worldwide bettors for over two decades. Both seem to be catching the interest of North Carolinians.

ESPN BET is likely getting a visibility boost from promotion across ESPN TV, radio, and digital platforms. Bet365 has instead focused on key local partnerships like its deal with the Charlotte Hornets.

Established Brands BetMGM, Caesars Also Intrigue

Well-established sportsbook operators BetMGM and Caesars also drew decent search interest at 5% and 6% respectively.

BetMGM already made noise partnering with Charlotte Motor Speedway and will likely become a major player in North Carolina. Caesars already operates two retail NC sportsbooks and brings strong brand cachet.

Both sportsbooks are known for having generous North Carolina sportsbook promos and rewards programs that should appeal to NC bettors once launched.

Upstarts Underdog, Fanatics Have Uphill Climb

Finally, newcomers Underdog Sports and Fanatics Sportsbook rounded out the list with minimal search traction. Both will need to build significant brand awareness and trust in the state.

Underdog is known for its daily fantasy app but North Carolina marks its first sportsbook venture. Fanatics just launched its sports betting operations in 2022 after success as an online sports retailer.

While they have potential, these upstarts have work to do to grab North Carolina sports bettors’ attention once the market opens up.

No Licenses Approved Yet, But Expect Fast Movement

As of now, no official operator licenses have been granted by the NC lottery commission, which regulates sports betting. But rapid approvals are expected within weeks of launch.

Deputy lottery director Sterl Carpenter indicated 8 of 9 applicants are on track for meeting requirements for the March 11th go-live date. These are assumed to be the top ranked sportsbooks from our analysis.

With launch just weeks away, North Carolinians are already scouting the imminent sportsbook landscape. From league leaders DraftKings and FanDuel to new players like Underdog, the competition for market share will be fierce.
