The Carolina Panthers recently hired Dave Canales as their new head coach. This change in leadership could lead to additional turnover on the coaching staff. However, the Panthers are hoping to retain popular defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, despite significant outside interest in him.

Blocking Requests to Speak with Evero

According to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, “multiple teams, the Giants and the Dolphins, have put in interview requests for Evero. To this point, the Panthers have blocked those requests.” Evero remains under contract with Carolina. The two sides plan to meet this week to discuss Evero’s future.

The Panthers have also reportedly denied requests from the Jacksonville Jaguars and other teams hoping to speak with Evero. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams may also attempt to recruit the well-regarded 43-year-old defensive play-caller.

Still a Candidate for Seahawks Head Coach

In addition to drawing coordinator interest, Evero is still in the running for the Seattle Seahawks’ head coaching job. He had his second interview with the Seahawks over the weekend.

Evero Joined Panthers in 2022

Evero joined the Panthers last season after previously serving as the defensive passing game coordinator for the Denver Broncos from 2017-2021.

In Evero’s first year with Carolina, the Panthers fielded a top 10 scoring defense, allowing just 20.2 points per game. Evero’s aggressive schemes led the Panthers to finish seventh in the NFL with 41 sacks.

Players and colleagues have praised Evero for his energy, communication skills and ability to connect with individuals across the defense.

What Happens Next

It remains unclear if Evero wants to stay in Carolina under the new Canales regime or if he prefers to take on a new challenge elsewhere.

The Panthers aim to convince Evero that Carolina gives him the best chance to continue his ascent up the NFL coaching ranks. But with demand for proven coordinators high across the league, retention will be difficult.
